“Wealth can only be accumulated by the earnings of industry and the savings of frugality.”

There was no secret to becoming wealthy when John Tyler said this and there is no secret now.  Building wealth is simple (note that I said simple, not easy):  work hard and save.  I think Dave Ramsey would agree.  He always likes to say that “if you live like no one else (i.e., work hard and sacrifice), later you can live like no one else (i.e., do whatever you want financially).”  Ramsey could probably add this John Tyler quote to his Financial Peace University course content.
