Thomas Jefferson

“I never considered a difference of opinion  in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”

Many “ordinary Americans” exhibit this trait, but when our leaders consider each other enemies instead of adversaries, that sentiment trickles down to the general populace.  Hopefully the newly elected federal leadership will move past the bitterness of a hard-fought campaign and come together to lead in a civil fashion.
